Kira Niro Named Car of The Year by Popular Mechanics

Introduced in 2016, the Kia Niro is a hybrid subcompact crossover. Equipped with a range of features, the Niro handles better than an SUV and a car comes with a six-speed automatic transmission designed to transform every drive into a joyride. Additionally, the plug-in hybrid version of the car contributes to sustainability by reducing your carbon footprint.

The 2019 version of Niro hit showrooms in the first half of 2019. Since its introduction, the 2019 Kia Niro in LaGrange has wowed critics and car lovers alike. Earlier this year, the 2019 Niro was named Car of the Year by Popular Mechanics.

Popular Mechanics does not need any introduction. Since 1902 when it was launched, the popular tech magazine has been covering innovations in technology (including automobile innovation). Some notable contributors for the magazine over the years include Thomas Edison, Jules Verne, Buzz Aldrin, and Winston Churchill. The idea behind the magazine was to present technological breakthroughs and how stuff works in a simple language, accompanied by illustrations and photos to aid comprehension.

According to Ezra Dyer, Popular Mechanics automotive editor, the 2019 Niro was named Car of the Year because it would be appealing even if it weren’t electric. Dyer said that the vehicle delivers all the benefits of an electric car without compromising on handling, range, quietness, and speed. Add to this the car’s affordable price tag and you have a complete package.

The magazine praised the 2019 Niro’s design, performance, practicality, and style, citing its ability to deliver outstanding performance both in the city and on the highway.

Expressing his thrill, Michael Cole, COO and executive vice president of Kia Motors America, termed Popular Mechanics selecting the 2019 Niro as the Car of the Year a momentous event for the South Korean automobile manufacturing giant. The top executive said that the company recognizes the 2019 Niro as one of the most important cars in its lineup of all-electric, plug-in, hybrid vehicles.

Powered by a liquid-cooled 64 kWh lithium-ion-polymer battery, the 2019 Niro is worthy of the Car of the Year accolade. Some notable things about the car include:

  • A powerful engine that makes 201 hp and 291-lb.ft. of torque.
  •  Superior charging protocol
  • 80 percent of the total charge capacity can be reached in 75 minutes.
